L’arte che cosa è? Due testi per il congresso di Amsterdam dell’Associazione interazionale Critici d’Arte Ponzoni

Conservato all’interno degli archivi ISAL (Fondo Gengaro, cart. 55, fasc. 02), il presente testo costituisce l’insieme delle due differenti tracce dattiloscritta predisposte dalla storica dell’arte in previsione del suo intervento al Congresso dell’Associazione Critici d’Arte svoltosi ad Amsterdam nel 1951. L’autrice, in maniera molto sintetica, sottolinea come l’Arte sia un modo di conoscere agendo, non attraverso processi di analisi, ma mediante operazioni concettuali di sintesi. Nel testo, nel quale riprende anche la posizione di Berenson che considera l’Arte come sostanza “intensificatrice di vita”, la storica dell’arte ripropone il dualismo vitruviano legato alle espressioni “quod signific” e “quod significatur”, richiamando la sua passione per la trattatistica antica e alcuni suoi saggi scritti negli anni precedenti.

What is art? Two texts for the Amsterdam Congress of the Interactional Art Critics Association

Preserved within the ISAL archives (Fondo Gengaro, cart.55, fascicle 02), this text constitutes the set of the two different typed tracks prepared by the art historian in anticipation of his speech at the Congress of the ‘Art held in Amsterdam in 1951. The author, in a very concise manner, emphasizes how Art is a way of knowing by acting, not through analytical processes, but through conceptual operations of synthesis. In the text, which also recounts the position of Berenson who considers art as a “life-intensifying” substance, the art historian recreates the Vitruvian dualism linked to the expressions “quod significance” and “quod significatur”, recalling his passion for the ancient treatises and some of his essays written in previous years.
