Milano, città cardine della modernità italiana, è stata culla di sperimentazioni e slanci innovativi dell’architettura del Novecento. In questo saggio l’autrice riflette sul patrimonio maturato a Milano in un clima di razionalismo incalzante, dal periodo tra le due guerre fino al primo decennio, o poco più, successivo alla seconda guerra mondiale; bene prezioso in quanto componente identitario della comunità. Riconoscere questo vasto patrimonio, riflesso di una stagione felice e singolare dell’architettura milanese, percepire il suo reale valore e proteggerlo, significa non solo consolidare cospicui aspetti della memoria storica locale, ma anche comprenderne a fondo i significati sia sociali che culturali di cui è portatore.

Reflections for the protection and conservation of rational architecture in Milan

Milan, the pivotal city of Italian modernity, was the cradle of experiments and innovative impulses of twentieth-century architecture. In this essay the author reflects on the heritage matured in Milan in a climate of pressing rationalism, from the period between the two wars until the first decade or a little more after the Second World War, a precious asset as an identity component of the community. Recognizing this vast heritage, a reflection of a happy and singular season of Milanese architecture, perceiving its real value and protecting it means not only consolidating conspicuous aspects of the local historical memory, but also to fully understand its social and cultural meanings of which it is the bearer.
