Saint-Michel de Pavie. Les portails et la sculpture des façades d’après les dessins de Fernand de Dartein. Dossiers des archives de Fernand de Dartein, VIII

L’autrice del saggio ha scoperto e ordinato gli archivi privati di Fernand de Dartein (APFD) che contengono un insieme, eccezionale per ampiezza e qualità, dei disegni preparatori per il celebre Étude sur l’architecture lombarde et sur les origines de l’architecture romano-byzantine (1865-1882) dell’ingegnere e storico dell’arte francese. M.-T. Camus, dopo averne delineato un sintetico profilo biografico, sviluppa qui ragioni e metodo dei suoi disegni relativi alle facciate della chiesa di San Michele a Pavia; compone in questo modo un articolato quadro interpretativo del corpus, pervenuto con lacune e spostamenti di parti, avanzando motivate ipotesi di identificazione. In questo modo Camus può accertare che Dartein aveva messo a punto il proprio studio sulla chiesa e che, in particolare, aveva disegnato accuratamente i ricchi dettagli scultorei della facciata principale prima dell’avvio dei lavori di restauro, documentati da Carlo e Siro dell’Acqua. Tale presa d’atto le consente di affrontare lucidamente il testo scritto di Dartein per l’Étude sullo stesso tema, consapevole dell’importanza che esso ha avuto fino a oggi presso i più attenti studiosi medievisti (Arslan, Peroni, Mazzilli e altri). Svolge infine una propria suggestiva e ben fondata interpretazione dei cicli scultorei sanmicheliani, oggi in gran parte illeggibili o scomparsi. Il saggio è ricco di interrogativi di natura storico-critica, di ipotesi ricostruttive in presenza di lacune degli archivi, di preziosi collegamenti tra le interpretazioni fornite dai molti medievisti fino ad oggi. Non mancano inoltre puntualizzazioni su differenze tra Dartein e Carlo dell’Acqua a proposito della storia del monumento e del suo restauro, che mettono in luce una questione tuttora di grande attualità: la tensione monumento/documento nella trasmissione delle opere dal passato al futuro.

The author of the article has discovered and rated the private archives of Fernand de Dartein. These archives contain a group of very high quality preparatory studies for the famous Étude sur l’architecture Romano-Byzantine (1865-1882) written by the French engineer and art historian. M. T. Camus outlines a synthetic biographical profile of Dartein and develops reasons and methods of the drawings he made of Saint Michael’s facades. She defines, in this way, an articulate description of the facades’ corpus that is arrived nowadays with blanks and moved parts. Moreover she forwards a motivated hypothesis to better identify the corpus itself. In this way Camus is able to ensure that Dartein has started his study about the church and has precisely drawn the rich sculptural details of the main facade before the restoration documented by Carlo and Siro dell’Acqua. This consideration allows Camus to lucidly face the text written by Dartein for the Étude about the same subject, having knowledge of its importance for the most relevant Medieval scholars such as Arslan, Peroni, Mazzilli and many others. In the end the author makes a suggestive interpretation of the sculptures present in Saint Michael, nowadays disappeared or illegible. The paper is full of historic and critic questions, of reconstructive hypothesis, of meaningful connections between the different interpretations given by many scholars until today. Moreover the article points out the difference between the view of the monument’s history and restoration proposed by Dartein and Carlo dell’Acqua. This theme underlines a vivid and actual problem: the tension of the monument/document that is passed on from the past to the future.
